In what seems to be turning into a annual irishy tradition (aka i'm making it one), I will link my pinching tale/survey in case any new people want to weigh in:
Pinch me, it can't be true!
so go ahead and read that and then come back, because i've got more.
...
ok. so now that you know about my fear of getting pinched, and my need to wear green on this most drunken of holidays, let me continue. usually i'll just wear something green to get in the spirit, but as i was looking through my (3) options, i was reminded of a fairly new addition to my tshirt army: a green shirt with that carebear with the clover on his belly on it and the word "Lucky" under him. i guess his name is lucky bear. so i immediately reached for that and then immediately recoiled. would that be going too far? getting too into the spirit? after all, i did just start a new job yesterday and there are only five other people in the office i'm working in. is that the kind of impression i wanted to make? i looked at the other two green shirts i have but then just decided "eff it and go all the way." so yeah, i nerded it up this year with a green tshirt with a clover on it. i was self conscious about it, but i did it anyway. when i walked into the office, only one other person was wearing green, and it was a rather classy green dress that faded into white. as a matter of fact, in the union square area (where the office is) i barely saw any green that didn't just happen to be the color of the article of clothing. i mean, i'm sure it was worn for the occasion, but it was more like clothes that were green instead of st. patrick's day clothes. i shrugged it off because honestly, it didn't matter. i wasn't getting pinched and i didn't look like a fool. then, i was sent on a run to the viacom building...which we all know is in times square.
if manhattan were gosford park, then the union square area (just in this example) would be the upstairs, while times square would be like, the less classier servants quarters. i walked out of the subway and it was definitely st. patrick's day there. there were giant green hats and clover glasses/scarves/ties/etc everywhere. people were not just wearing green, but they were wearing the green st. patrick's version of the i <3 ny shirt (i clover ny), jackets that proudly proclaimed "IRISH" and there was even a guy with a green bowler hat and a box of lucky charms around his neck. it immediately made me feel better about the degree in which i participated in the holiday as well as how much better working further downtown is.
did anyone else have any fun/crazy st. patty's day experiences?

a series of unfortunate events
as i've mentioned here before, i go through patches of unfortunate luck. i have a feeling that i'm wading through one of those patches right now, what with my kitchen sink recently calling it quits, that time i committed to a shower before realizing that the water was not warming up at all, and the call i got from my building's management company yesterday saying they never received my rent check (even though, according to my bank, they received and deposited it). i'm hoping that this patch ended with the events of last night, the details of which still cause me to make this face: >:O
i had plans last night to meet up with Moms in order to see a mutual friend in a play. we had planned to meet a little over an hour before the show and grab some food and beverages. we met at the theater and decided it was best to buy our tickets first, to ensure we would get seats. we were greeted by our first sassy gay boy of the night, who told us that the show was sold out. he then offered to put us on the waiting list, but made a point to say that if we were to get in on the waiting list, we would not get the wednesday night discount rate of $10, but would instead have to pay the full $18 price. THAT IS FUCKING RIDICULOUS, RIGHT?! so moms raised a stink about it, he coyly fed us the line "we'll see what kind of mood i'm in when you get back" and told us to return at 8:25.
so then we head off in search of McCann's Pub, a place nearby that our mutual play-starring friend suggested would be great to satisfy our hamburger and beer cravings. we head off in search of this so-called pub. in the meantime, moms is so hungry i fear she might soon break into some sort of violent reaction. we are having trouble finding the place, so we stop into a place that looks decent called Pop Burger. after perusing their menu and noticing that they have both burgers and beer, we decide to eat there. we are greeted by two more sassy bitchy gays who seem as uninterested in taking our order as if we were asking a couple of random customers. one of the cashiers seems awfully confused by the register, and they both kind of ignore Moms ordering. We decide 'fuck this noise' and ask if they know where McCann's Pub is. Immediately, they both are like 'we don't know this area' 'i don't know anything about it' but they tell us that there is a Pop Burger Lounge up the stairs. Moms asks if the prices are the same (two 3oz burgers for $7, a beer for $4) and they tell us that indeed they are. We head up the stairs and get a seat in the fancy lounge. i immediately notice on the menu that they are charging $8 for a beer and $15 for the two 3oz burgers. apparently, going up a level makes everything cost twice as much. we apologize to the waitress, tell her we were lied to downstairs, and continue on in search of mccann's pub.
as we are walking with no luck, we pass a building with a couple of doormen hanging around outside. Moms asks them if they know of McCann's Pub. They say that yes, they do know of the place, and that it in fact closed about 3 years ago. !!! ready for the kicker? he then continues with "do you guys know where Pop Burger is? That's where it used to be." !!!! OF COURSE the place we were endlessly searching for was overtaken by fucking POP BURGER.
ugh, so we end up at this wonderful little place called Burger Heaven, quickly enjoying delicious cheezburgers and cheap beers. it gets to be about 8:23, so we head outta there. we get back to the theater at 8:27. the original sassy gay notices us, waits a few minutes, gets on his walkie talkie, and then basically tells us we're shit outta luck. i'll tell you what kind of mood he was in when we got back, bitch mood. even though we were only two minutes after when he told us to be there, he had it out for us and seeing that play last night was not meant to be. then with the fakest smile around he says "try again!". oooh i could've killed some people last night and burned some places down.

Score one for the NYPD!
i don't often experience joy at someone else's pain or downfall, but in this instance, i'm just too giddy to help myself:
Tatum O'Neal busted for crack
i feel completely guilt-free in jumping for joy at this news and i have good reason. i may have alluded to this (or even gone into detail) previously, but just to reiterate-- many of you know that tatum o'neal is my number one enemy. if anyone ever asks me about bad celebrities i've worked with, she is always my first and most emphatic answer. and this wasn't just a one-day thing, i was on a film with this bitch for a good couple of months. not only is she an absolutely terrible actress, she is really a class D human being too. She made my friend, the propmaster, cry when she was just trying to do her job (all over a prop purse), she has huge hideous opium poppy tattoos on both of her arms (i know this isn't a personality trait, but it shows she makes bad decisions), she didn't treat most of the crew very well, except the cute boy 25 years her junior that she kept making eyes at. she once held us back almost a full day of shooting (and pretty much demanded that we change location or she'd call her lawyer) because the hotel room we were using as a set was making her cough. also, this 'please let me go, this was my first relapse' bullshit that she said to the cop that caught her hands-full of baggies of crack and cocaine, is such JUNKIE TALK! oh this is her first relapse, but she just happened to know she could pick up a couple baggies of what she needed from the homeless man three blocks over. and, we're pretty sure she was meeting regularly with her dealer on the film. there would be many instances where she was acting like a raging bitch, would go off and meet with some guy and come back a little while later happy as a clam.
my point is, i'm elated at this news. i'm sorry that she's suffering from addiction, i do wish her luck in getting through that, because i'm fairly positive that a lot of her rank behavior and attitude has to do with her drug problems, but seriously. get her off my tv screen and off the streets. she was buying crack from a homeless man! and she said it was research for a part! what an idiot. that is all.

Tales of Underage Wooing
Aside from a few random drive-by pick up attempts (e.g. 'hey baby, looking good'), it has been a little while since there has been any wooing attempts to report about. However, I feel like May might be a little different, based on this story I'm about to tell as well as the two myspace messages i received this morning -- one from a guy i've never met or seen before asking me on a date, and another one proposing immediate marriage.
On the very first of may, kicking off my month of wooing, i was headed home from work. As i approached the entrance to the subway station, there was a pack of about 7 or 8 boys clogging the staircase, joking around and being young boys. I didn't really take any statistics at this point except that they were slightly rowdy. As I weaved through their group to try and pass their slow asses on the steps, i heard one of those boys make some comment. I was listening to my ipod, so i couldn't really hear what it was, but i had an inkling that it was about me. I didn't break free from their pack until the bottom of the steps, and at that point, i weaved around the one in front and broke into a quick walk in order to prevent being stuck in their pack for the next group of steps. this is when i heard one of them say something to the effect of 'go ahead, break free'. still, i questioned whether they were, in fact, talking about me.
then i heard "excuse me, miss?". I took off one earbud and turned to the kid. (he could not have been older than 17 years old.) He told me that his "friend back there" was "interested in talking to me for a bit". I turned around to see who he was talking about and of course faced a pack of 8 boys. I was then directed to the kid wearing 'the DC shoes', turned back around to the boy that approached me, laughed, and said 'i think i'm probably a little bit older than you think i am.' He sneakily asked for my age first before committing to an age for his friend. I told him i was 25, and his split-second surprised reaction confirmed for me that he thought i was younger.. he then told me his friend was 19, he swears. his friend was not 19, i swear.
we continue walking to the turnstile and i'm like "i'm actually on my way somewhere" (why can i never just lie about having a boyfriend?!?!) and he's all 'i know you're in a rush, but if he could just have a minute to talk to you.' i said 'right' acknowledging that i knew that's what he was asking, he took that 'right' as an 'ok' and happily exclaimed to the kid in dc's that i had 'said yes!'. i literally said 'woah woah woah, no i didn't.' then i said 'you're really 19?' and the kid nodded. i heard my train coming (they were headed the opposite way) and said 'i'm sorry, i have to go'. the friend kept pleading (he was really putting more effort into this than the actual kid that wanted to talk to me) and asked just for a quick minute. i apologized again and the friend was like 'can i at least ask your name'. so i shook his hand and told him my name, he told me his name was raymond, i turned to get the kid in dc's name, but he just stood there silent as a ghost, so i turned around and left.
but what if i was so desperate for luvin that i talked to this guy and then got arrested and thrown in jail for carrying on with a minor?!?!

nice knowing ya
I had the news on this morning as I was getting ready for work, and there was a story about an explosion that went off in times square. since i work in times square, i started paying attention. There is this little traffic island in the middle of times square known as Military Island (a recruiting center), and apparently there was some sort of explosion early this morning resulting in a pile of glass right outside the building. This made me a little nervous, but the news didn't seem too concerned, so i headed off to work. When i walked past military island (it's like, half a block from my building) i indeed saw the pile of glass and the broken glass doors. cops were surrounding the island (luckily, military island is right next to a little cop station [but not like cops can protect anyone from explosions]) looking all official. My attention was drawn to the helicopter that was just hanging out above us. this actually made me more nervous because it seemed like the helicopter wanted to be there to catch footage in case anything else happened. I continued into my building and opened my google reader, where i was greeted with this story. As my friend bill said, "a biker in new york with a backpack. should stick out like a sore thumb."

Subway Spotlight: Confused Model (?)
Today's Subway Spotlight is brought to you by one injured left wrist, and one sprained right ring finger (thanks boxing!)...so keep in mind that the wrist is wrapped and the finger is taped, and at some point i'm going to get tired of hitting the delete for my typos.
I was on my way home from work today in the thick of rush hour...like no room on the train rush hour...and since i was stuck in between people in one of those middle areas with no poles to hang on to , i had to perfect what i imagine my snowboard stance to be while focusing on powering my core so as not to fall ass over tits in the middle of the F. I noticed behind me some tall pretty lady in the midst of a convo with some shorter dude, but i really payed it no mind until i realized a few minutes later that she was just kind of shooting the shit with him and they didn't really know each other. a few stops later, a seat cleared up and i nabbed it. a stop after that, the seat next to me cleared, and this lady took a seat.
after a couple stops on our ride together, she turned to me and asked me "If i'm going to clinton and delancey, where should i get off?" I told her that the stop she was looking for was Delancey. She asked if this was the next stop and i told her it was probably two or three stops away. She continued sucking on her heart shaped lolly until two stops later where she asked "is it this one?" and i said "no this is 2nd avenue, it's the next." at the next stop, she said "this one?" and i told her yes. throughout our ride together, she informed me that she never rides the subway, so she doesn't really know how to get around (i could tell by how friendly and willing to strike up convos with subway strangers that she was not an avid train rider). she then asked if i ride it everyday and when i said yes, she told me that she usually drives everywhere, so it's hard for her to figure it out. in fact, earlier, she tried to get a subway downtown to delancey and ended up on an uptown train going to 23rd st (can i get a heavy sigh from the new yorkers here?). many things led me to believe that this poor confused soul was a model. here is the list:
- tall
- skinny
- beautiful
- slight accent
- sucking a heart shaped lollipop
- fashion forward hairdo
- "drives everywhere" which I believe equals "cars pick her up and take her wherever she needs to go"
- i basically had to hold her hand until her stop.
- trying to go downtown but accidentally took it uptown (aka dumb)
this confused model (?) is not our typical subway spotlight honoree, but i thought she deserved a mention for her commitment to our plebian ways of traveling undreground and her pure fascination at the skill us mortals possess when it comes to navigating a twisted web of train lines.

dogs wear clothes? whaaa?
Today I found myself in a situation where i got to tell a stranger that his dog had lost a shoe. that shoe was fancier than any shoe i own (but not fancier than the kicks i saw on some chihuahua yesterday). Also, the dog was wearing a sweatsuit. that is all.

COOLER THAN STUPID'S SNOWDAY FUNTIMES!
ok. not really. we all know that snow days dont' exist anymore.the one sucky thing about living in nyc is that since the subways don't really shut down when it snows, there is essentially no such thing as a snow day for us idiots who take nyc public transportation to work. it's the one time i truly envy people who live in new jersey.
lets make the best of this situation, and think of some fun things to do on a snowy day in nyc, shall we?
* when you fall backwards into the snow (both falling in the slush and cracking your ipod in the process), why not make a snow angel?* when step into a slush puddle up to your knee, think - well, at least that woke me up. who needs coffee, when i can be jolted back to reality by freezing cold liquid filth?
* when you can't put your bag of trash in the trashcan because the it's covered in 3 feet of snow and you can't open the lid, why not use your bag of trash as the foundation for a snowman?
* when you take your dog for a walk, look at deep snow as an open invitation to not pick up it's crap. it'll make it an even funnier surprise for that lucky person who slips into it.
* don't shovel, especially if you live on a heavily trafficked area of sidewalk. watch the pedestrians have fun "skating" when the sidewalk in front of your home or business has been compressed and turned into ice.
* find the dirtiest pile of snow, ball it up in your hand...and throw it in a trash can. seriously, did you think i was going to tell you to throw it at someone?

My run-in with the cops
Firstly, I'd like to announce that, although there wasn't much (or any) fanfare, Becca's most recent post was Cooler Than Stupid's big 400th post!!! YES! We're WINNERS!!!!
moving on..
today was one of those days where i did something that i had to do, even though i reeeeely did not want to do it. i'm still kind of dealing with that bank fraud crap i mentioned a few posts ago (bucharest!! grrrrr), and even though i've gone through what i believe are all the proper steps to take in a situation like this (tell my bank, get a new card, put out fraud alerts) my mother insisted that i go to my local po po station and file a report. after giving her some lip about how the nypd has better things to do than blow me off, i buck up and call my local precinct. the friendly man who answers tells me that i just need to print up a statement showing where the fraudulent activity occurred and to either call 911 to have the cops come to my house or head down to the station and talk to a detective in person. and because i'm not about to invite coppers into my house (they make me nervous) i printed out my statement, highlighted the offending transactions, and headed to the 70th precinct.
i'm not too sure what i expected to see when i got there. maybe in the back of my mind i was thinking angie harmon or mariska hargitay would put an arm around me, tell me things would be okay, and lead me to a desk where we would hatch a plan to catch this criminal. considering that i'm not a special victim and this is not a murder case, that scenario was just not to be. and since there's no Law & Order: Bank Fraud, i had nothing to base my expectations on. i entered the police station and got all nervous (as i mentioned earlier, police make me nervous)...especially because there were like, 3 different reception desks, no sort of order anywhere in the station, and clusters of cops chilling with each other and shooting the shit. oh yeah and some dude getting his possessions returned to him. my plan was to be in and out as quickly as possible, but was met with my first obstacle -- which desk to go to. so i just kind of stood around hoping one of the cops would say 'can i help you?' (i mean sheesh, you are public servants!) for about 10 minutes, then eenie meenie miney moe-d and went up to one of the desks. i told the officer that i was there to file a bank fraud report and he said to just have a seat. then some old bat gets all huffy because this dude got helped before her. it took all i had in me to not push her out of the way and point out that i'd been there much longer than either of them. so after i waited for about 15 more minutes and witnessed a fellow get brought in cuffed, the officer that told me to take a seat got up from behind his desk, walked around to the second desk and called me up. (yes that happened.)
i explained my situation to this winner and he looked my bank statement up and down. he asked if my bank had issued a second card and i responded that they had, thinking he meant did they cancel my old card and issue me a new one. he said, 'oh well that's the problem.' so then i explained that i had misunderstood and corrected the error. he told me i needed to get a letter from them saying that they hadn't issued a second card because the statement clearly shows that these fraudulent transactions were done via atm. once i get the letter, i can come back with my statement and then file a report. oh and he also was like 'do you have an id?' and i said yes and he said 'ok...because you need an id to file a report. you have one?' i was not sure if this was a comment on me looking 10 years younger than i am or my ethnicity, but either way it kind of pissed me off. this whole interaction pissed me off but i had to remind myself that i was in a police station and must reign it in lest i get cuffed (and not in an exciting way). he tells me again the steps i need to take and then excuses his french and says that he thinks its bullshit and that this is the banks fault. and like...i'm pretty positive that my bank did not fucking authorize a second atm card to be given to a random romanian without notifying me and then played dumb when i called in to report it. yeah, mr. cop, i'm really fucking sure that it's the bank's fault. there haven't been any sort of technological advances that would allow someone who knows what they are doing to clone an atm card (as my bank told me is what probably happened) with information taken from the internet or even straight from an atm machine.
moving on..
today was one of those days where i did something that i had to do, even though i reeeeely did not want to do it. i'm still kind of dealing with that bank fraud crap i mentioned a few posts ago (bucharest!! grrrrr), and even though i've gone through what i believe are all the proper steps to take in a situation like this (tell my bank, get a new card, put out fraud alerts) my mother insisted that i go to my local po po station and file a report. after giving her some lip about how the nypd has better things to do than blow me off, i buck up and call my local precinct. the friendly man who answers tells me that i just need to print up a statement showing where the fraudulent activity occurred and to either call 911 to have the cops come to my house or head down to the station and talk to a detective in person. and because i'm not about to invite coppers into my house (they make me nervous) i printed out my statement, highlighted the offending transactions, and headed to the 70th precinct.
i'm not too sure what i expected to see when i got there. maybe in the back of my mind i was thinking angie harmon or mariska hargitay would put an arm around me, tell me things would be okay, and lead me to a desk where we would hatch a plan to catch this criminal. considering that i'm not a special victim and this is not a murder case, that scenario was just not to be. and since there's no Law & Order: Bank Fraud, i had nothing to base my expectations on. i entered the police station and got all nervous (as i mentioned earlier, police make me nervous)...especially because there were like, 3 different reception desks, no sort of order anywhere in the station, and clusters of cops chilling with each other and shooting the shit. oh yeah and some dude getting his possessions returned to him. my plan was to be in and out as quickly as possible, but was met with my first obstacle -- which desk to go to. so i just kind of stood around hoping one of the cops would say 'can i help you?' (i mean sheesh, you are public servants!) for about 10 minutes, then eenie meenie miney moe-d and went up to one of the desks. i told the officer that i was there to file a bank fraud report and he said to just have a seat. then some old bat gets all huffy because this dude got helped before her. it took all i had in me to not push her out of the way and point out that i'd been there much longer than either of them. so after i waited for about 15 more minutes and witnessed a fellow get brought in cuffed, the officer that told me to take a seat got up from behind his desk, walked around to the second desk and called me up. cooler than stupid's guide to temping
I just finished a temping stint which lasted about a month and a half and now feel distanced enough to offer this list of do's and don'ts for the up and coming temporary office worker.
Do:
accidentally show up early and pretend you did it on purpose
Don't:
pile 14 large water glasses on top of each other inside the sink (where it is your first day working) only to turn around to see the glass tower fall over and shatter into many tiny pieces.
Don't:
accidentally print out every single page of the coolface blog on the shared printer and since you didn't know it printed, leave it there for a better part of the day until your boss finds it (i acctually did this at my old full time job......how i never got fired is beyond me).
Do:
Walk anywhere you are going (most likely nowhere in particular) really fast and with a very serious look on your face and a pad of paper in your hand. Everyone will think you are hard at work.
Don't:
Drop the same phone caller when trying to transfer him five times in a row until he screams at you and you have to give him the guys direct number. (in my defense - i think my phone was broken)
Do:
Type fast and furiously, evem if you aren't typing anything at all.
Dont:
Roll your eyes when the dipshit boss dude of some "hip" design firm yells at you for paging him over the intercom because you confused him because he was already on the phone...even though he really wanted to talk to the person who was on the phone, and he got mad at you for putting them through to voicemail.
Do:
Take tons and tons of meaningless notes.....all the time
Don't:
Tell yourself that you are just going to close your eyes for a second while nobody is walking by, and then wake up an hour later.
Do:
Pull the fire alarm

Hot off the Wire
Umm...Heath Ledger is dead. and i feel really weird about it. I just saw this on the news...i guess his body was found about an hour and a half ago in his bed...surrounded by some sort of pills. nothing funny about this. just sad.

Tales of Wooing
Welcome back to another installment in our new "Tales of Wooing" series, where we share notable and innovative ways in which city men have cast their lures upon us. I had a shoot today, and my first duty of the day was to pick up the rental van so i could collect folks and shuttle them to set. I got in a cab at 5:30 this morning (yipes) and headed over to good ol' courier to collect my vehicle. After the fellow in front of me finished up his business, I approached the counter and told courier window man that i was picking up a 15 passenger van (yeah ricky, i DO drive vans for a living. i know you judge me for it.) and gave him the po #. as he was filling out the paperwork, he walkied to his man downstairs to let him know what i needed so they could get it ready.
COURIER WINDOW MAN: Yeah, i need a 15 pass.
VAN RETRIEVER: you got it.
CWM: A nice 15 pass.
VR: ok
CWM: A nice-looking 15 pass. With lots of gas. *smiles at me*
VR: ok.
pretty good. it's kind of like i have men all over town taking me out to dinner and giving me nice cars. but actually more like getting a free large soda and the promise of chips and giving me a rental van that has all rearview mirrors intact. and like, a bumper.
the best part, i think, happened after i bid adieu to the window man. i headed downstairs to find my chariot for the day, and i meet van retriever man face to face. he smiles at me and says "He wants us to get you a nice-looking van because he thinks you're nice-looking." thank you, sir, for spelling that out.

cooler than stupid's signs of aging volume I
i do not believe that there is one definitive moment when we realize that we are no longer young, but rather a series of them. Yesterday I experienced one of these moments when i witnessed a baby (maximum age of 2) in a stroller on 3rd ave operating and listening to an ipod. i am just going to admit this right now - i am 26 and do not know how to operate an ipod.

Tales of Brooklyn Wooing
When it comes to random guys in nyc catcalling or mumbling something like "i'll show you what you're missing baby" as they pass, i think my good friend cyanide put it best when she said that it's something that you never quite get used to around here. in general, i hate it. it does not make me feel pretty or loved. sometimes, the things a dude comes up with are pretty hilarious and i will laugh out loud (or LOL) as i pass them....it's like, if you had one sentence to try and woo some random girl passing you in the street, you'd think you'd come up with something better than "hey baby" or "i likes what i sees*" (*- this one unfortunately has never personally happened to me, but a girl can dream)...it's like...do they really think i'm gonna turn on a dime, throw my arms around them and say "wow, nobody has ever said anything that romantic to me before! i'm all yours!" who does it benefit? but i digress...so yeah, usually it's annoying, sometimes its hilarious, if they catch me at the right time it might make my day a little better, but this rarely happens. however, if you throw in free stuff, we're in a whole new ballgame.
my love of subway sandwiches is no secret, so you can imagine my joy when i moved into a new neighborhood last summer and found a subway sandwich shoppe a mere three blocks from my apartment. (coincidentally, there is also a subway train station at the same place. imagine the possible hilarious mixups!) however, i've been turned off from this subway since it seems to have erratic, fly-by-night hours. twice i've gone there before nine, with the flourescent sign flashing open, gotten one foot in the door, and some 18 year old worker is in there chatting up some girls as he turns to the door and says 'we're closed'. shady, i know. unfortunately, since i got back from my trip sunday night to an empty refrigerator, haven't had time to make it to the grocery store, and have already exhausted the only two other food options in my neighbeehood that i'm aware of, i thought i'd give the subway a try. after all, i was going before 8, and no subway in its right mind would close by then. i walk over and see the open sign, fully expecting to have to just pick something up at the grocery store anyway, walk in and see the 18 year old kid stacking chairs and cleaning and start to get discouraged. i make it through the door and all the way into the eatery without anyone telling me that it's closed. success! i wait behind some other dudes in line as a sandwich artiste i've never seen before keeps eyeing me whilst serving them. when my turn comes, he keeps shooting me smiles and being overly friendly. i coach myself to be prepared to respond that i have a boyfriend (being perpetually single and having an aversion to lying, i get myself in a lot of awkward situations). he asks if i'm spanish, i respond that i'm mexican. he then says "beautiful...you're beautiful" so i thank him and tell him what toppings i'd like. he then says "well someone has to tell you." i thank him again and ask for mayo. he finishes up my sandwich and rings it up, totalling a mysteriously low $4.00. i pull my hands out of my pockets to get my wallet and he says "oh so you don't have one. i was waiting to see your hand." great, now i have to start wearing a fake wedding ring around. i'm at that age. he continues "well you can take me out anytime." i laugh uncomfortably. i pay my four dollars and he gives me a huge drink cup for free. i thank him again and go to fill up my deliciously free large beverage. i turn to leave and he says "want any cookies or chips?". I respond 'no thanks. maybe next time.'
ok great. i got some free shit and could've had more. cool. but if this goes the way of the gyro man from park slope, i might have one less eatery in kensington. i guess my question is this: do i get myself in these situations because i just can't bring myself to lie to a stranger about an imaginary significant other, because i accept free gifts (who wouldn't?), or because i unnecessarily offer hope for a future? or like, all of the above?

Crazy Roundup
Here's a list of crazy things that have happened recently, four of which happened yesterday...
1) I saw a woman walking down the sidewalk wearing a blue baggy work shirt, a con ed helmet and carrying a yellow wet floor/watch your step sign. All of this seemed pretty convincing attire for a worker...what gave me pause was what she was clutching in her left hand - a corona bucket used to carry her umbrella (it was a sunny day). still, though, it appeared as though she was a normal and not a crazy...until she came to a full stop and started michael jackson dancing.
2) I was walking to pick up a rental van for work when i noticed a large group of unkempt babbling folks in front of me. it was too late before i realized that it was a mass of homeless people all waiting for something, and i was already amongst them, traveling through the nucleus in order to get to the rental place. i suddenly felt very uneasy, as though i could be shanked for my egg and cheese at any second. homeless people to me are like stray cats...one at a time, they make me sad, but in large groups i just want to back away slowly.
3) Driving out in long island, i passed a white SUV on the opposite side of the northern parkway with its whole front completely aflame. i don't think i'd ever seen anything like that that wasn't cgi'd.
4) my co-worker and i were sitting in a van behind some building at some studio down at the brooklyn navy yards and we were waiting for a security guard to come and help us locate a storage container. we were shooting the shit when we suddenly heard a male voice shout something to us. we both looked to the left and saw a car with its headlights blinking, but could see no man. he said something else and the lights blinked again at the same time. it happened once more and i was really starting to think that we had just met kitt. then the security guard appeared.
5) on the subways here in nyc, each car has two pairs of what i like to call 'lovebird seats' on either side. lovebird seats are located against the end of the car and another railing or wall that's right next to the door. they are really just two seats with no room for improvising. for the majority of my trip, i was sitting in one next to a skinny lady, so we both had ample room. three stops before where i was to depart, my riding partner got off. i was reading a magazine (as i do) and listening to my ipod (same) so i really don't pay attention to what's going on around me, but i felt somebody sit down in her place and i could tell it was a large man. at first, i could just feel the weight of him sitting and my personal space wasn't violated, so i just assumed that it was a big boned man...but then the fat started seeping into my space and i was slowly pushed against the wall of the subway car, possibly even going in a diagonal fashion. i quickly glanced to my side to see if jabba had come to exact revenge and a little bald headed face (attached to jabba's body in a coat made with the most fabric i've seen for one garment) turned to me and sweetly said "sorry!". my heart broke a little and i diagonally said 'it's ok!' and continued reading. when my stop came, i struggled to look around him to make sure it was where i needed to be, then wriggled out of my seat and headed for the doors. he grimaced at me with his jack-o-lantern teeth, in what i can only assume was meant to be a smile and he apologized once more. again, my heart broke and again, i brushed it off saying 'it's ok!'. he then very enthusiastically said 'have a nice day!' and i returned the sentiment.

Idiots deserve to be lost
Last night, as I was heading to meet my friends for a halloween good time, I was stopped by a Julie Chen-looking lady (aka the chenbot, host of big brother) asking which direction Bleecker was in. Since i had just exited the subway, it was taking me a couple seconds to get my bearings, so as i was thinking, i responded with an "uhhh..." which i guess can be interpreted as "i don't know"...however, when she followed up her question with "or Lafayette?", I was knocked back into my right mind, got my bearings and said "that way!" (with the enthusiasm implied by an exclamation point) and pointed her in the correct direction. Pleased with myself for helping out a fellow human, i waited on the corner for the walk signal to come on so i could continue on my way. Out of the corner of my eye, i saw her kind of huddle into the man she was with and then the two made an about face and started walking in the direction opposite from what i pointed. I don't know if it was because I was dressed up as Dora the Explorer and looked 6 years old, or if it was the extended "uuhhhhh..." before i committed to the answer, but as they tried to sneakily cross behind me and i heard the Chenbot say to her mate "i KNOW that Bleeker is this way." Ok, first of all, bitch, if you KNEW bleeker was that way, why the hell did you ask me? and second of all, bitch, bleeker was NOT that way and i hope you spent the entire night searching in the wrong area and you missed whatever douchebag party you were headed to. and then i hope when you realized your mistake, and that you should've listened to that little dora on the street corner, i hope your man dumped you.
after a few minutes of fuming over this, i was able to enjoy my evening. some highlights included the best duo ever dressed as a couple Thundercats (i'll post a picture when i get a chance to upload it)...not only did they have the bods for it, but they also made the costumes themselves. I also appreciated a girl named haley dressed as an american apparel ad and a dude on the train dressed as Hulk Hogan. he got points for commitment, since his lower half was only covered by yellow wrestling speedos. he also got points for putting up with all the shit he was getting from dudes that were clearly not as secure in their manhood as he whilst riding the train.
and finally, completely unrelated, i opened up the cnn website today and was greeted with a headline that made me giggle. Officer shot in donut shop robbery dies ..not the dying aspect of it, of course. and then i outright laughed when i thought more about a cop meeting his maker in a donut shop. and then i actually clicked on the article and read it and i got sad.
but i mean...it's still kind of funny right?

public peeing - law enforcement edition
i'm not sure how to classify this post - so i am creating a new cooler than stupid category called the public peeing spotlight!
welcome to the first installment of the public peeing spotlight!
the star of todays spotlight is a man i passed yesterday it who was peeing all over a police car.
it was broad daylight on a pretty populated street and i heard the sound of water flowing...it sounded distinctly of water flowing, but i thought nahhh, couldn't be! but there he was - taking a wiz (how the hell do you spell wiz?) all over a cop car.
if i were a malicious cop car peer (which i am most definitely not!) i think i would pee on the handle on the door....

mark your calendars people!
i was excited to find out that queens (my borough of choice) is getting in on the restaurant week action at the end of this month like manhattan and brooklyn. in case it's new to you, during restaurant week, restaurants provide a reasonably priced 3 course meal (in this case it's $20.07). it's usually a good way to sample the food at nice restaurants you might not normally be able eat at.
here's a link to the list of participating restaurants
(you have to click on the restaurant week poster thing)
and now here is my question. why the hell is white castle on this list?!
i really am curious what $20.07 prix fix meal at white castle is comprised of....
